The Opposition has raised concerns over visa protection claims, accusing the Labor government of losing control of Australia’s borders.
Last week, around 43 asylum seekers were taken to Nauru after arriving by boat in Western Australia.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton has called the Albanese government weak for their handling of border security.
Concerns were initially raised when more than 100 detainees were released after a landmark High Court ruling last year.
“If it weren’t for budget cuts; if it weren’t for the release of the stateless detainees, then the Prime Minister could point to it as a one-off to which he has reacted strongly,” Bondi Partners Senior Advisor Peter McGauran told Sky News Australia.
“It’s a strong point for the Opposition.”
