A man from Ireland has drowned at a beach in Melbourne, one of more than two dozen people to have lost their lives in Victorian waterways this summer.
The 77-year-old man was at Edithvale beach in the city’s south-east on Thursday afternoon when tragedy struck.
Emergency services were called to the scene off Denman Avenue about 3pm after the man was pulled from the water after being found unresponsive.
Victoria Police said in a statement a report will now be prepared for the Coroner.
Data from Life Saving Victoria shows that 24 people drowned between December 1 last year and February 13 this year, six more than the five-year average.
Meanwhile, reports also emerged on Thursday a swimmer had drowned at Broadbeach in Queensland.
The Courier Mail reported the man, aged in his 60s, was pulled from the water about 1.30pm.
CPR was administered but the man died at the scene.
