Labor MP Andrew Charlton has claimed the vehicle emissions standards are a “very reasonable policy” because it ensures Australian motorists have “greater choice” and manufacturers don’t use Australia as a dumping ground.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton has called the proposed vehicle emissions standards a ‘car tax’ and a ‘ute tax’.
“I think it’s a little unfair [of a] comparison to say the United States is slowing down and we’re pushing ahead because the reality is we’re a long way behind the United States,” Mr Charlton told Sky News Australia.
“They have had vehicle emission standards in place for a much longer period of time, and they have worked.
“For that reason, emissions standards in the United States are strong, and Australia is well behind.
“This is about Australia catching up to the United States from a position well behind them, not about Australia heading off in front of the United States or any other country.
“This is a very reasonable policy.
“It’s a policy that will make sure Australian motorists have greater choice, and the international manufacturers can’t use Australia as a dumping ground for their poor efficiency vehicles.”
